Description
Handcrafted, scratch built and readymade model ship of Young America
Young America is one of the many wooden ship models which have been carefully handcrafted here at Premier Ship Models, with high attention to detail. Young America, a world famous sailing ship was built by William Webb in 1852 at this shipyard in New York and launched in 1853, at the height of the clipper construction boom. She soon went on to be viewed as an American symbol for its technological innovation, gracefulness and representing the countries modernity in the global economy.
The construction of the sailing ship allowed fast sailing as it went on to break two speed records, one from Liverpool to San Francisco and the other from California to New York. This soon led to many shipping companies using the ship to deliver goods quickly. The main characteristics which have been included in this model of a ship are Young America’s sharp bow and narrow hull.
Constructed with three-masts and originally rigged with three skysails, the sailing ship was later re-rigged to double top sails. Leaving Philadelphia in 1886, with a large amount of crude oil, Young America had made its last journey and was not heard of again.
