Wappen von Hamburg, also named as the Empress, was commissioned to be built by Dutch shipbuilders in Hamburg, Germany. Overcoming the delays of building by various negotiations and consultations caused that the ship took up its service in 1669. Until 1683, Wappen von Hamburg serviced as an escort vessel on voyages to Spitzbergen and the West.
A major accident occurred in October of 1683 when a fire broke out whilst on the Cadiz route, reaching also the arsenal which caused a massive explosion. Along with many injured man, sixty-five men have died in attempts to save the ship. In 1897, the City of Hamburg honoured all the man by building a monument to remind the tragedy of Wappen von Hamburg.
