Kon-Tiki Wooden Model Ship Kit
The story
Some historians will go to great lengths to prove that their findings are in fact true. Such as the Norwegian explorer and writer, Thor Heyerdahl, who set out in 1947 to prove that the people of South America settled in Polynesia during the pre-Columbian era. In order to do this, he constructed a raft called the Kon-Tiki, which he sailed from South America to the Polynesian islands.
Heyerdahl used only materials and technological advancements that would have been typically available to the South American populous of the period he was studying. The voyage took him a total time of 101 days and encompassed a distance of 6900 km across the Pacific Ocean. The project was privately funded and there was a great deal of risk involved. Heyerdahl was successful however in completing the journey and thus proving that it would have been possible for people to sail across the Pacific Ocean with the technology and materials they had at the time.
The story of Heyerdahl and the Kon-Tiki raft has inspired multiple forms of pop culture, including the Academy Award-winning documentary film, which told the story of his famous mission.
The Kon-Tiki raft is now on display in a museum in Oslo.
