Description
Thermopylae was a clipper ship built for Aberdeen Line, a shipping company founded in 1825 by George Thompson. The ship garnered nationwide attention and later made a name for itself after racing against the Cutty Sark from Shanghai to London. Thermopylae went on to win the race by a large margin of 7 days, earning her a reputation as the fastest sailing ship and benefitting the Aberdeen Line business.
A clipper had three masts and a square rig. The combination of a narrow hull with three masts meant that the ships had a large total sail area. These features are what made them so fast and led to their common use along trade routes around the world.
Similar to the Cutty Sark, the introduction of steam technology meant clipper ships were used less along trade routes, and she was eventually sold by Aberdeen to Portugal in 1897 to be used for naval training purposes.
