Description
Texaco Bogota Oil Tanker ship model
Oil tankers are large ships used for the mass transport of oil. There are two different types of oil tankers, crude tankers and product tankers. Crude tankers are much larger vessels that are used for transporting oil from the point of extraction to refineries. Product tankers are much smaller in size as it is necessary for them to be able to make port and fit in to docks. Product tankers carry the refined oil to the docks where they are then ready to go to market.
During the 1980’s, crude tankers became increasingly larger, leading to the range of ships known as ULCC’s, or ultra large crude carriers. Although these ships were useful for carrying large amounts of oil they became increasingly unpopular and are rarely used nowadays. The ULCC’s of the 1980s and 1990s reached very large sizes of up to a few thousand metric tonnes of deadweight.
