Description
The French LE PROTECTEUR was a 74-cannon ship that was launched in Toulon in 1760. The liner was part of the French fleet in the naval battle off Grenada on 6 July 1779. Accommodating over 400 men. Decommissioned in 1789.
In 1788, Under Captain Dapchon, Protecteur was appointed to Admiral d’Estaing’s squadron and took part in the American revolutionary war. She was present at the Battle of Grenada.
From 1784, Protecteur was hulked and used as a hospital in Rochefort.
