The real King Mississippi was a steamboat built in 1844 by the Howard Shipyard in Jeffersonville, Indiana. At the time, steamboats were the primary mode of transportation and commerce on the Mississippi River, carrying passengers, goods, and livestock up and down the river.
The King Mississippi was considered one of the most luxurious and well-appointed steamboats of its time, with ornate cabins, fine furnishings, and exquisite woodwork. It was also one of the largest steamboats ever built, measuring over 340 feet in length and weighing over 3,000 tons.
The ship’s design featured four decks, including a grand promenade deck, a main deck with a dining room and saloon, and two lower decks for cargo and machinery. The King Mississippi was powered by a massive steam engine that drove a paddlewheel 36 feet in diameter, enabling it to travel at speeds of up to 20 miles per hour.
