HMS Beagle Ship Model
The HMS Beagle was one of the most famous ships of its time for different reasons. The most famous of all is without a doubt its journey of naturalistic research, captained by Commander Robert FitzRoy and with a young Charles Darwin on board.
The HMS Beagle was built by the Woolwich shipyards as one of the Cherokee-class of 19-gun brig sloops and was launched into the Thames River on May 11, 1820. In July of that same year, as part of the celebrations for the coronation of King George IV, the Beagle was the first ship to sail under the new London Bridge.
In total, the HMS Beagle made 3 great trips. It was not until his second trip, when Darwin embarked. Of the almost five years that this second expedition lasted, Darwin was three years and three months on land and eighteen months at sea.
