Early History of the HMS Endurance: The HMS Endurance was originally a Danish vessel by the name of Anita Dan. It was built by Grogerwerft in 1956 for the Lauritzen Lines. The British Royal Navy acquired it in 1967. The ship was converted by Harland & Wolff, and the Royal Navy named it Endurance, the first of its ships to have that name. From 1967 to 1991, it served as an Antarctic patrol vessel. Based in Chatham, the ship represented Britain around the Falkland Islands. It assisted the British Antarctic Survey.
The HMS Endurance in the Falklands War: The HMS Endurance was to be decommissioned on April 15, 1982. However, Argentinean civilians hoisted their country’s flag over South Georgia on March 19, 982 and the ship was sent from Port Stanley to evict them. The ship had on board a small Royal Marine detachment and others from the Falkland Island’s garrison. When they landed on South Georgia on March 25, 1982, they had to surrender to over 100 troops and a naval corvette from Argentina. On April 2, the Royal Marine detachments were overpowered by fresh Argentinean troops.
The HMS Endurance remained alone for two weeks in the South Atlantic. Finally, The HMS Endurance along with the HMS Antrim and the HMS Plymouth participated in the operation that helped British Forces take over South Georgia on April 25, 1982. The Endurance was the last ship to return from the conflict. It docked at Chatham on August 20, 1992. Around 20, 000 people came to the Strand at Gillingham to watch it return. Several aircraft were also flown to welcome the ship back home.
