MSC Cruises is setting sail into a bold new era with the announcement of its upcoming New Frontier class of mega ships. Slated for arrival in 2030, this new generation of cruise ships promises to combine cutting-edge design, next-gen environmental technologies, and exceptional guest experiences—without simply being bigger for the sake of it.
What Makes the New Frontier Ships Special?
MSC Cruises’ latest venture includes four ships already on order, with the possibility of adding two more in the future. Each New Frontier ship will accommodate up to 5,400 passengers, placing them firmly within the mega-ship category. While they will be smaller than the industry giants, like MSC’s own World Class ships or Royal Caribbean’s Icon Class, the New Frontier will still be much larger than most vessels cruising today.
At the heart of the New Frontier class is an innovative approach to ship design and environmental sustainability. Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman of MSC Cruises, explained that the goal isn’t just to build larger ships but to rethink the entire cruising experience. “The New Frontier class will enable us to design new and exclusive itineraries, offer exceptional guest experiences, and feature next-generation environmental technologies that will advance our net-zero 2050 commitment.”
A New Partnership with Meyer Werft
MSC Cruises has also partnered with Meyer Werft, one of the world’s most renowned shipyards, to build these mega ships. Known for its engineering excellence, Meyer Werft is a pioneer in adopting emerging fuel solutions like liquefied natural gas (LNG), which enhances fuel efficiency and reduces environmental impact.
The partnership with Meyer Werft marks a milestone in both companies’ histories, with this being the first time MSC Cruises has worked with the German shipyard. Meyer Werft’s CEO, Dr. Bernd Eikens, called the collaboration a “significant milestone” in the yard’s 230-year history. The renowned shipyard is known for its efficient, cutting-edge designs, and its role in building ships for major cruise lines like Royal Caribbean and Disney Cruise Line.
What’s Next for MSC’s New Frontier Class?
MSC Cruises has yet to reveal specific details about the ship’s layout, amenities, or headline features, but the New Frontier class is expected to offer more flexible and exclusive itineraries—while still maintaining the massive scale cruise fans love.
The first ship of the New Frontier class is expected to arrive in 2030, with subsequent ships set for delivery each year after that. This gives fans plenty of time to dream about what’s to come, but one thing is clear: the New Frontier class is set to make waves in the cruise industry.
