HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding division has successfully completed builder’s sea trials for USS Zumwalt (DDG 1000), marking a major milestone following the vessel’s extensive modernization program.
The sea trials were conducted by a joint Ingalls and U.S. Navy team and included a comprehensive series of at-sea tests designed to validate the ship’s systems and overall performance. These trials followed a major modernization availability that transforms USS Zumwalt into the Navy’s first Conventional Prompt Strike (CPS) platform.
Major Modernization and Weapons Integration
USS Zumwalt, the lead ship of the Zumwalt-class destroyers, arrived at Ingalls Shipbuilding’s Pascagoula facility in August 2023 for modernization. Shortly after arrival, the ship was moved onto land to allow teams to complete significant technology upgrades.
Key enhancements included:
- Integration of the Conventional Prompt Strike (CPS) weapon system
- Removal of the original twin 155mm Advanced Gun Systems
- Installation of new missile tubes to support advanced strike capabilities
In December 2024, USS Zumwalt was undocked and entered the final phase of preparations to ensure operational readiness prior to sea trials.
CPS Integration Across the Zumwalt-Class Fleet
Modernization efforts extend beyond USS Zumwalt.
- USS Lyndon B. Johnson (DDG 1002) is currently undergoing CPS weapon system integration at Ingalls Shipbuilding.
- USS Michael Monsoor (DDG 1001) is scheduled to receive the CPS system during a future maintenance availability.
These upgrades are part of the Navy’s broader effort to enhance long-range strike capabilities and adapt to evolving strategic requirements.
