The Museum of Surrey has unveiled a new Community Treasures exhibit that is sure to captivate history buffs and model enthusiasts alike. Titled “Fleet of Memory: Canadian Warships Remembered as Models,” this exhibition showcases the extraordinary craftsmanship of Yvon Lehoux, a Cloverdale resident whose passion for ships and the sea has resulted in some truly remarkable replica warships.
The exhibit highlights several models of iconic Canadian warships, including the HMCS Algonquin, the ship Lehoux served on during his naval career. The collection also features models of the HMS Victory, Komagata Maru, and HMCS Skeena, each telling its own unique story of naval history. The Komagata Maru model, built by Lehoux from English blueprints, stands as a particularly significant piece, being the only known replica of this historic ship.
A Life Shaped by the Sea
Lehoux’s journey through the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) spanned over three decades, with the naval career of this Chief Petty Officer Second Class taking him across the globe. Joining the RCN in 1975, Lehoux served on several ships, including HMCS Skeena and HMCS Algonquin, eventually retiring after 30 years of service.
In his words, “The sea is in my blood.” The exhibit, located in the Surrey Stories Gallery, brings this deep connection to life. Visitors can immerse themselves in the history of Lehoux’s naval career through photographs, memorabilia, and, of course, the finely detailed ship models he created.
