The most famous British ship, HMS Victory, is actually the sixth ship of the British Royal Navy to carry this name. It was launched in 1765 and participated in many wars including the American war of Independence, the French Revolutionary war in the war against Napoleon Bonaparte where the ship gained its most memorable fame. HMS Victory became the flagship of Admiral Nelson in 1803 in the Mediterranean Fleet. The biggest fame associated with HMS Victory is being a flagship in the battle of Trafalgar in 1805 which was the biggest success of the British Royal Navy in the war against Napoleon. After participating in many other wars, the ship was sent to dry dock at Portsmouth in 1922 to be preserved as a museum ship. Nowadays, HMS Victory is the oldest naval ship still in commission.
