VANGUARD STEAM TRAILER

Thomas Ellis built the Vanguard wooden paddle tug in 1841.  Tugs were used to tow sailing vessels in and out of the Tyne.  The wooden paddle tug was a forerunner of the dedicated tugs that were to be a part of the scenery and history of the River Tyne.  The advantage of a paddle tug was to allow larger vessels to navigate the river up to Newcastle and reduce delays in port.  After having several owners the Vanguard was scrapped in London in 1863.
