The San Luis Galleon participated in the Battle of the Dunes, fighting against France and Holland in the Eighty Years’ War (1568-1648).
Used as armed cargo carriers by European states during the age of sail (16th-18th centuries), galleons were large, multi-decked sailing ships. They were used as warships until the Anglo-Dutch Wars in the mid-1600’s. Galleons had three or more masts with a lateen fore-and-aft rig on the rear mast. Square rigging sail plans were used on the foremast and main masts.
These ships were the mainstay of maritime commerce into the 19th Century and the contending fleets through most of the 150 years of Age of Exploration. They were also drafted into use as auxiliary naval war vessels.
