This boat is a type of Chinese sailing ship with fully “battened” sails incorporating bamboo spines for stability. The hull has no keel and has a short stern. There are two types of junk in China: Northern junks, which developed from Chinese river boats, and southern junks. The southern junks were developed from designs of maritime states in the area, trading with the Eastern Han dynasty since the 2nd century AD. Predominantly used by Chinese traders throughout Southeast Asia, they continued to evolve in later dynasties. They are still found throughout Southeast Asia and India, but primarily in China.
Junks have many different types of coastal or river ships. They can be cargo ships, pleasure boats, or houseboats. They can range in size from small river and coastal vessels to large ocean-going ships. Even though there are significant regional variations in the type of rigging, they all employ fully battened sails.
