Used by the United States Navy during World War II, a PT boat (patrol torpedo boat) was small, fast, inexpensive to build and valued for its maneuverability. However, in the beginning of the war the boat had ineffective torpedoes, limited armament and fragile construction which limited some to the coastal waters.  The US Navy organized them into Motor Torpedo Bat Squadrons (MTBRONs).

The one PT boat that we all remember is John F. Kennedy’s PT-109.  Over 800 of these sleek and deadly wooden PT Boats were built to serve in both the Pacific and Atlantic theaters.

This model boat kit is a typical 1942 80’ Elco PT boat.  This kit is recommended for intermediate to advanced model builders due to the large number of very small parts and delicate detailing.  It should be determined in advance whether to use a gray paint scheme or green camouflage due to the construction method of painting each subassembly before putting the whole boat together.

BlueJacket Shipcrafters, Inc. has been in continuous operation for many years.  The company was founded in 1905 by a U.S. Navy Department architect and head of the Navy’s model shop in Washington, DC.  They are the oldest ship modeling company in the U.S.  They specialize in the design and manufacture of wooden model kits and model ship fittings. All work is performed by their craftsmen and is not outsourced.

This is an intermediate to advanced level model.
