About the Vessel

RMS Titanic was a famous British passenger liner, which sank on its maiden voyage. The passenger liner started its maiden voyage on 10th April 1912 from Southampton to the New York City. It was built by Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast and operated by the White Star Line. The British ship sank in the North Atlantic Ocean on the fateful morning of 15th April 1912. The lifeboats of RMS Titanic played a major role in that disaster.

One of the great innovations of the RMS Titanic was the installation of 15 waterproof bulkheads, which included electrically operated watertight doors, extending to four or five of its nine bridges and designed to render the vessel unsinkable. However, despite all of its safety features, the Titanic had only 16 lifeboats and 4 foldable boats to serve 1,178 people or 35% of total passengers, including all crew members.

Primarily, the Titanic was designed to carry 32 lifeboats but at the time of the accident, it was carrying only 20 lifeboats. Hence, all the passengers and crew members could not be evacuated with the help of these lifeboats. During the evacuation, women and children were first allowed to board the lifeboats.

Many of the lifeboats carried only half of their maximum capacity. Different people have different stories about why these lifeboats carried less passengers. Some of the sources revealed that people were scared that lifeboat might buckle due to the heavy weight. While others believed that it was due to the strict protocol of women and children first for boarding the lifeboat.

Moreover, doors and hatches were also locked so that passengers on the lower decks could be prevented from easily accessing and swamping the lifeboats. Some of the last lifeboats were overfilled with people, and passengers noticed the line of seawater was near to the rim on some of these lifeboats.
