About the Vessel
“Flattie” is a local slang, indicating a classic boat of Chesapeake Bay located on the north-east coast of the United States. A large number of these type of boats were constructed in the years ranging from 1880 to 1890. The flattie boats were mostly used during these years.
The result of a complex historical evolution, this fishing boat featured a V-shaped hull. She had a flat and wide deck with length between 5 and 9 meters.
Originally, the flattie boat was used to carry domestic products. However, it was later extensively utilized for the collection of crabs and oysters. This process of collecting was carried out after ploughing the depths using a short and strong net bag, pulled from the boat with the help of a cable.
She was very successful mainly among fishermen. The original Flattie ship was 9 meters long. She had a flat bottom on the front and had transverse edges.
