Columbia Model Boat Kit

History of the boat

The Columbia is a classic racing yacht built for the America’s Cup competition. The ship raced on behalf of the New York Yacht Club, found in 1844 by nine public sportsmen and based in Rhode Island. The Columbia was the winner of the 1958 America’s Cup competition, where she raced and bested the British challenger Sceptre.

The boat was designed by Olin Stephens and built by Nevins in preparation for the 1958 trials. After winning the first race in 1958, the ship later went on to compete in the Defender trials in 1962, 1964 and 1967. The Columbia was a 12-metre class ship and had the sail number US-16.
